The coronavirus is spreading all over the world and no one seems to be safe. In the meantime, the number of infections in our country also continue to rise. Scientists all over the world are looking for a vaccine against COVID-19. As long as there is no vaccine, we will need to be extra careful to try and limit the spread of infections as much as we can.
What exactly is the coronavirus
At the end of December 2019, an outbreak of a new corona virus (COVID-19) started in the Wuhan region of China. Since then, the virus has also spread to other countries, including in Europe. Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can infect humans and certain animals, including birds and mammals such as camels, cats and bats. Some coronaviruses can be transmitted between animals and humans. So far it has been shown that seven coronaviruses can also cause an infection in humans. When animal coronaviruses evolve, infect humans, and spread further between humans, it can lead to outbreaks such as MERS-CoV and SARS.
Symptoms of the coronavirus
Common signs of infection are respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. Preliminary figures show that in more than eight out of ten patients, symptoms remain mild and the disease disappear on its own.
